Bridge Street Horncastle

Numbers 7-13 Bridge Street Horncastle are Grade II listed buildings, situated within the conservation area in the town centre of Horncastle, Lincolnshire. In 1988, the buildings were in an extremely dilapidated condition and numbers 7 and 9 had to be supported with scaffolding to prevent collapse.

When negotiations with the owner of the properties failed to reach a solution, East Lindsey District Council Conservation Department began proceedings to compulsory purchase the buildings. The Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire entered into a ‘back to back agreement’ with the Council, in which the Trust agreed to take on the repair of the properties. In November 2004, Heritage Lincolnshire took over the buildings and the repair project, for which Taskers were appointed as main contractors, began on site in January 2005.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund and was supported by East Lindsey District Council and the Architectural Fund.

The pictures show how the buildings have evolved over the years and how, during the contract, the many historical features have been preserved.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England presented an award to the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire for this work.
